The One That Got Away.
Every winter, the canals of Amsterdam are illuminated by a dazzling array of large-scale artworks, as part of the Amsterdam Light Festival. For 2020’s theme, ‘When Nature Calls’, designers were invited to submit a concept inspired by a teaching from the natural world.
When threatened, shoaling fish form a shimmering baitball, packing tightly together to disorientate predators and make it harder to pick off individual fish. I interpreted this in my artwork proposal, ‘Together We Are Stronger’; in the face of the dangers humanity collectively faces, we can only succeed if we work together and protect one another.
The concept was successful in being chosen as one of the 20 shortlisted artworks, but unfortunately due to the Coronavirus, the festival was unable to go ahead as intended.
